Since 1998, American company Illumina has developed, manufactured, and marketed systems that analyse genetic variation and biological function. Used primarily by the sequencing, genotyping, and gene expression sector, its customers include genomic research centres, pharmaceutical companies, academic institutions, clinical research organisations, and biotechnology companies.

In 2020, Illumina engaged Dardan to provide security services for its 155,000-square-foot state-of-the-art premises in Granta Park, Cambridge, just five minutes from our own head office.

The Challenge

Illumina needed a round-the-clock security service for its EMEA headquarters to administer and monitor security systems, manage front-of-house visitor and staff experiences, support on-site events, and form an integral link to security teams based at the Illumina global head office in San Diego.

They wanted a security partner that had the ability to deliver these services in a professional and cost-effective manner, take a keen interest in the operational side, and provide appropriate support to Illumina staff.

Our Approach

With existing knowledge of Granta Park and the surrounding area, we knew how important it was to secure this valuable site and its assets, both intellectual and physical and protect the Illumina brand.

We were determined to provide an exceptional customer journey for all Illumina visitors, employees, and partners at every point of contact. We felt confident we could deliver a safe, secure, and unmatched service that catered to the client’s unique needs.

Dardan’s involvement in the security sector also brought added value to the partnership. For example, our management of the Cambridge Security Forum, which brings together security and facilities managers to receive police and counter-terrorism updates, share knowledge, and undergo training, and our custodianship of the Cross-sector Safety and Security Communications (CSSC) for the Eastern Region contributed greatly.

Our Impact

The mobilisation period commenced in October 2020, with a ‘go live’ of February 2021. As with all mobilisations, the most critical stage of the process was the transfer of undertakings protection of employment (TUPE) phase. This is when on-site employees choose whether they want to transfer to the new contractor, rather than remain with their current employer. We were proud to achieve a 100% TUPE transfer rate.

We continue to provide a service focused on people and technology to ensure our security offering for Illumina is as integrated and impactful as possible.
